DA Eastern Cape condemns senseless killing of Port Elizabeth activist

The Democratic Alliance in the Eastern Cape on Tuesday said that it learnt with shock the sad news of the horrific killing of Norman Plaatjies, a well-known DA activist in Port Elizabeth's Northern Areas.

"Norman’s killing came just few days after the Executive Mayor of Nelson Mandela Bay, Athol Trollip, raised an alarm about death threats received by two DA councillors in the municipality," described Mlindi Nhanha, DA Eastern Cape Provincial Spokesperson.

Plaatjies, 58, died after being shot by two unknown gunmen, who entered the family’s Bethelsdorp home at about 11pm last week Monday. He was a respected community leader and a member of the local community policing forum.

Nhanda said that the DA Provincial Leader, Nqaba Bhanga, and Executive Mayor Trollip visited the Plaatjies family over the weekend to pay their respects and support the family during these trying times.

"We strongly condemn this act of criminality with the contempt it deserves and we call on the South African Police Service (SAPS) to do everything in their power to bring the culprits of this heinous crime to justice as soon as possible," he said.

"We further wish to call on the SAPS to act more decisively against the increasing crime in the Eastern Cape.

"Our sincere condolences go out to the Plaatjies family. You are in our thoughts during this most difficult time."
