DA praises the late Mandla Makupula says he was let down by education officials

As condolences pour in following the death of Eastern Cape MEC for Education, Mandla Makupula, on Monday morning, the Democratic Alliance (DA) said it was a sad day for the province.

"I would like to express our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Education MEC Mandla Makupula, who passed away during the early hours of this morning," said Edmund van Vuuren (MPL), DA Eastern Cape Shadow MEC for Education.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time.

"It is a sad day indeed."

'We worked well with Makupula'
Van Vuuren said that he worked well with Makupula, who had been a member of the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature since 1999 and held the position of MEC of Education since November 2010.
"He was a man, who was passionate about education, and we often consulted and sought out ways that could solve the many systemic issues and challenges his department was facing," he described.

The DA often lambasted Makupula over what it called mismanagement of the Education portfolio in the Eastern Cape. The Eastern Cape has also for years produced the country's worst Matric results.

"He was a man who was willing to listen, and who would put the interests of Education first. He tried his utmost to make a difference but was, at times, let down by some of his officials," Van Vuuren explained.
"He fought his battle bravely, to the very end.
"The province is poorer at his passing."
