DA says Makana statement appealing to 'western' residents to save water divisive

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Makana Local Municipality on Thursday said that it noted a media statement by an unknown municipal official that states that 'if the residents of Makana Municipality, particularly on the Western side, continue to disregard the water restrictions that have been put in place by the Municipality, Settler’s Dam might run dry by the end of November'.

"The DA finds this statement reckless and divisive and we call on the municipality to retract it," said Mlindi Nhanha, DA Caucus Leader for Makana Municipality.

"While we acknowledge the water crisis in Makana and encourage all residents to use water sparingly, we strongly condemn blame being filtered to one part of the community."

Nhanha said that the allegation by the municipality that water abuse is higher in the western side of the city is unfounded and divisive.

"The DA believes that the majority of Makana residents adhere to water restrictions as it’s in their best interest to do so.

"Instead of generalising, officials need to identify offenders and deal with them accordingly," he said.

"Makana Municipality needs to start prioritising service delivery to its residents until it improves.

"Our municipality cannot continue to suffer due to an uncaring government that only looks out for its own."
