DA to visit SASSA offices in the Eastern Cape

The Democratic Alliance's (DA) Shadow Minister of Social Development, Bridget Masango MP; the DA Shadow MEC of Social Development in the Eastern Cape, Kobus Botha MPL; DA Member of the Eastern Cape Legislature, Veliswa Mvenya MPL, and various DA councillors are expected to visit a number of South Africa Social Security Agency (SASSA) satellite offices and pay points to assess the quality of services provided to grant beneficiaries in the Eastern Cape.

"17 Million South Africans, who are often poor and vulnerable depend on SASSA social grants to feed their loved ones," the party said.

"The most vulnerable tend to live in the rural areas and their hardships often forgotten. Our people have to wait for hours in the cold to gain access to a social grant.

"In some cases, we have heard that beneficiaries are forced to sleep over outside of SASSA offices to ensure that they will receive their only source of income."

It said that the Minister of Social Development, Bathabile Dlamini, and her department have clearly forgotten about the needy and poor in our society, as she is prioritising African National Congress (ANC) internal politics over the plight of the elderly, needy children and the disadvantaged in the country.

"The DA will, therefore, visit affected communities to get to the bottom of this issue, to ensure that our people have the dignity they deserve," the party added.

The oversight will take place as follows:

Date: Monday, 2 October 2017

Venue: Gcuwa, Butterworth (100km from East London)

Sassa Pay Points:
• Chizele Community Hall

Sassa Pay Points (rural):
• Nopoto/Mvuzo
• Magiqweni/Ponti
• Nompucuoko
