Daniela Ryf wins her fourth IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship

Defending Champion of the IRONMAN 70.3 Championship, Daniela Ryf (31) from Switzerland, secured her fourth win in Saturday’s Isuzu IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship and her seventh win for the overall IRONMAN competition.

The seasoned, Swiss athlete was the favourite to win and dominated the race, showing her strength as she kept a steady pace and passed competitor, Lucy Charles, early on during the bike ride.

Lucy Charles (24) from the UK, came in a close second place with a close three minute gap. In third place was German athlete, Anne Haug.

Daniele Ryf, gave an incredible race with a time of 04:01:13, Lucy Charles had a time of 04:04:59, while Anne Haug came in with a time of 04:07:22.

Daniele Ryf said, “I felt strong in the swim, but my zip broke when I went into the bike ride and that was challenging, but I pushed hard on the bike and pushed through. Going into the run I found my legs”.

“It was a challenging race, but a great day here in South Africa and I’m so happy to have won here. Lucy Charles made the race tough for me today, I have a lot of respect for her” she added.

Lucy Charles said of the race, “I was lucky, because I won the IRONMAN in Port Elizabeth in April, I had a lot of support from the locals, cheering me on. It was a great race”.

South African athlete, Jeanni Seymour (26), who has competed in fourteen international IRONMAN competitions and has been the champion of five, came seventh in Saturday's race.

The international media coverage for the day focused on how friendly the people of Nelson Mandela Bay were and how beautiful the race course is.

The race was a success and the event ran smoothly. Many locals came out to support the race and give encouragement to the athletes, waving flags on the side lines in camaraderie.
