DA's Renaldo Gouws in a resounding win in Ward 2 by-election

The win is great news for the DA, which needs all the numbers it can get if it hopes to unseat the ANC-led coalition government that is currently running the Nelson Mandela Bay.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) on Wednesday romped home to a stunning victory in the Ward 2 by-election held in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro.

Nelson Mandela Bay's Ward 2 had no Councillor after former DA Councillor, Dean Biddulph, resigned in December 2018.

The DA’s candidate, Renaldo Gouws - a famous YouTuber, obtained 3 400 votes, which is 93,36% of the 3642 votes cast.

"The DA also increased its share of the vote in Ward 2 and obtained more votes than in the 2016 local government elections, up from 90% to 93,36%," said DA Eastern Cape leader, Nqaba Bhanga.

"This result is a resounding vote of confidence in the DA. This endorsement from the voters proves that the DA remains on track to return to government in Nelson Mandela Bay."

'ANC saw a huge drop in support while COPE, ACDP and EFF got marginal votes'

He added that the African National Congress (ANC) saw a big drop in support, with its candidate, Oliver Copley, receiving only received 145 (3,98%) votes.

"The rest of the parties, such as the ACDP, Cope and EFF, could only muster a fraction of the vote," said Bhanga.

"It is also a clear indication that the DA is set to increase support in the 2019 elections.

"We are grateful to voters for giving us this mandate and we don’t take it lightly."

The win is great news for the DA, which needs all the numbers it can get if it hopes to unseat the ANC-led coalition government that is currently running the Nelson Mandela Bay.
