DASO kicks off Sakhingomso campaign to assist Eastern Cape students

The Democratic Alliance Student Organisation (DASO) on Monday kicked-off its month-long Sakhingomso campaign at campuses of higher learning across the Eastern Cape.

"We find ourselves in one of the poorest provinces, where there is unequal access to resources and financial assistance," said Hlomela Bucwa MP - DASO EC Constituency Leader.

"DASO believes that no deserving student should be denied access to education because of the circumstances of their birth. Students should not have to return home because they lack finances.

"They should not sleep in computer labs because of a lack of accommodation and they should not go to bed with empty stomachs."

She said that the Sakhingomso campaign was launched in 2012 and is aimed at assisting all prospective and senior students during the trying times of the January intake period across campuses of higher learning.

The campaign aims to:

  • Provide relevant information and advice to those students who are at risk of being academically or financially excluded;
  • Negotiate solutions with management and other relevant stakeholders;
  • Inform students as to the purpose and function of the Student Representative Council (SRC); and
  • Address and identify issues relating to admissions, examinations, financial aid, student housing, international student matters, special needs and students with disabilities

"Education is the key to break the shackles of poverty and enables people to participate in the economy of a country that is free and fair with equal opportunities for all," Bucwa added.
