Delivery man chases down armed Port Elizabeth robbers, apprehends one

Port Elizabeth - A brave delivery man chased after fleeing robbery suspects and successfully apprehended one in a side street in Sidwell, Port Elizabeth, on Tuesday afternoon.

"It is alleged that at about 15:55, four men posing as customers entered an electrical business in Sutton Street in Sidwell, Port Elizabeth, and then left," described police spokesperon, Colonel Priscilla Naidu.

"About five minutes later, three returned and held the staff at gunpoint.

"The complainant (22) and the staff were ushered into the office and he was forced to open it. The complainant’s cell phone was also taken."

Col Naidu said that a bag, which was mistaken to be money was taken.

"The bag contained keys and not money," she added.

"The suspect also did not realise that the complainant’s cellphone fell out of his pocket as he was bending.

"As the suspect’s fled the premises, the delivery person was riding in with his motorbike and saw the suspect with the firearm.

"He chased after them on his motorbike and managed to apprehend one suspect in Fowler Street (Side Street)."

She said that the other two suspects ran away.

"The bag of keys was also found in his possession."

The 24-year-old suspect from Kwazakele is now expected to appear in court soon on a charge of business robbery.

"Mount Road Detective Trio Task Team members are following up on several leads of the outstanding suspects."
