Deployment of COCC members to Northern Areas yields results

The strategic deployment of police officers by the Mount Road Cluster Operational Command Centre (COCC) to Port Elizabeth crime hotspots is yielding positive results, Port Elizabeth police said on Thursday.

"On Wednesday, at about 22:30, Bethelsdorp members were patrolling in Calm Street when they noticed a suspicious male walking," said police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu.

"The male appeared to be nervous and he was seen taking out an object that resembled a firearm which he disposed of.

"Upon closer inspection the police members discovered that it was a firearm and immediately arrested the suspect, who is allegedly a member of the 'Kakmaker' Gang."

The suspect was detained and will appear in court soon.

She said that also on Wednesday, at about 20:30, the Port Elizabeth Tactical Response Team (TRT) and Visible Gang Intervention Team members arrested a 22-year-old suspect, who is wanted by the Gang Investigation Unit for an attempted murder case, which took place earlier in the day in Burke Road.

"The complainant was shot at by the suspect. No injuries were sustained," she said.

The suspect will appear in court on Friday.
