Dept of Water DG faces chop after just seven months on the job

Department of Water and Sanitation Director-General, Dan Mashitisho, has been given a notice of intention to suspend, subject to him providing reasons as to why he should not be suspended.

Minister Nomvula Mokonyane requested the DG to provide these reasons based on transgressions considered serious by the Minister, department spokesperson Mlimandlela Ndamase said on Sunday.

“Adherence to the principles of confidentiality in the matter is critical so as not to tarnish the integrity of the DG before a fitting process has been finalised. In this regard, once a response is received and considered a decision on the matter will be made accordingly,” explained Ndamase.

Ndamase said the process is confidential and is a matter between the employer and the employee concerned.

“As with all such matters, the department and ministry will be guided by established legislation and labour practices in this regard.”

The Department of Water and Sanitation announced the appointment of Mashitisho in December 2016 with his appointment effective on the 3rd of January 2017.

It lauded him as a season administrator. His most recent employment was at Mogale City Municipality where he served as the City Manager, a position he held since 2006. Mashitisho served in the same capacity at Merafong Local Municipality and held numerous positions in local government over the past 22 years.

Minister Mokonyane welcomed the appointment of Mashitisho, saying she was confident in his capabilities.

“We wish him well in his new role and we are confident that he will continue the efforts towards good governance and improved access to water and dignified sanitation,” said Mokonyane then.

This development comes a few days after the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Senzeni Zokwana, also placed his Director General, Mike Mlengana, on suspension with immediate effect, pending internal investigations.

“The suspension is a precautionary measure and does not in any way constitute a judgment,” the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries said in a statement.

The department’s Deputy Director General: Agricultural Production, Health and Food Safety, Mooketsa Ramasodi, was been appointed to the position of the Acting Director General with immediate effect.
