Despatch mother and her four children perish in another shack fire

Uitenhage - The South African Police Service in Despatch are investigating an inquest docket after five members of a family died after their informal home allegedly burned down at about 20:30 on Tuesday night.

"The family resided in an informal home in a new area called Bayland that is situated next to the R75, outside Despatch. The Police and the Fire Department were summoned to the scene where the home was engulfed in flames," described police spokesperson, Captain Gerda Swart.

"It was reported by a neighbour that a mother (34) and her four children (three boys – ages 13, 6 and 3-years-old and an 11-month-old baby girl) were residing at the premises."

She said that the cause of the fire is not known at this stage and it is under investigation. The names of the victims will only be released once their next-of-kin was informed.

The news comes after four people, including a toddler, died in another shack fire in Malabar Ext 6, Port Elizabeth, last week.

Acting Uitenhage Cluster Commander, Brigadier Ronald Koll, expressed his sincere condolences towards the family for their immense loss.
