Dreams come true for Varsity College Port Elizabeth students

Port Elizabeth - Six students’ dreams came true from around Port Elizabeth when they were awarded a scholarship to study towards a The Independent Institute of Education (IIE) Bachelor of Education in Foundation Phase Teaching degree at the IIE’s Varsity College PE campus in 2016.

Four years later and they are now excited graduates. One of these graduates is Chelsea Harty, who is also proud recipient of overall Top Achiever for the IIE Bachelor of Education in Foundation Phase Teaching degree.

She achieved a remarkable 46 distinctions out of 48 modules completed over the four years of her degree. The IIE’s Varsity College Port Elizabeth graduation ceremony, which was originally scheduled for Thursday, 9 April would have been a celebration for the PE’s campus’ first cohort of its IIE’s Bachelor of Education in Foundation Phase teaching degree.

The IIE’s Varsity College rolled out its Scholarship for Aspiring Teachers across its 8 campuses in July 2015 to encourage all students with a passion for teaching to apply for the scholarship. Scholarship recipients for the PE campus and class of 2019 graduates include: Chelsea Harty, Tamryn Blignaut, Neliswa Mnqumeni, Demaine Jansen, Logan Hunt and Maxene Cherry.

Chelsea served on the VC Cares committee (the student volunteer body on campus) from 2016-2018, where she also served as Chairperson in 2017 and 2018.

She stepped down in 2019 as she was voted VC Voice (student body which acts as a conduit of communication in a reciprocal manner to the wider student body and The IIE’s Varsity College Senior Management) President.

“I will be forever grateful for the Education Scholarship. Without it, I wouldn't be where I am today. Being surrounded by my younger siblings, I discovered I had a passion for seeing how young minds grow and develop. Personally, I enjoy learning about new things, and I wanted to ignite that sort of passion into those young minds. After being in classroom environments, I have found that my passion for teaching has only grown stronger, and I cannot wait to see how children are shaped and molded into their own beings,” says Chelsea.

Said Paul Manson Campus Head The IIE’s Varsity College Port Elizabeth: “It is only with hard work, self-discipline and dedication that this can be achieved and we are very proud of Chelsea for demonstrating these characteristics during her tertiary studies.

"Her commitment to her studies brought her exceptional academic success, expanded her thinking and drove her to work hard to achieve her goals of being Top Graduate in her qualification for 2019.

Other overall 2019 Top Achievers includes: Britney Kriel (IIE Higher Certificate in Business Principles and Practices), Charnel Nieuwenhuizen (IIE Higher Certificate in Human Resource Practices), Christine Boolsen (IIE Higher Certificate in Event Management), Sihle Jokani (IIE Diploma in Commerce in Business Management), Rebecca Kemp (IIE Diploma in Sports Development and Management), Lee-Anne Fry (IIE Bachelor of Commerce), Tiaan Fourie (IIE Bachelor of Commerce Honours in Management), Dewald Pretorius (IIE Bachelor of Arts), Nadine Smuts (IIE Diploma in Public Relations), Dale Haysom (IIE Higher Certificate in IT in Support Services), Karel Schwab (IIE Diploma in Information Technology Software Development), Camagwini Villem (IIE Higher Certificate in Legal Studies) and Shannon Bradford (IIE Bachelor of Commerce in Law).

“On behalf of The IIE’s Varsity College Port Elizabeth team we wish all our graduates the best of luck as you continue your journey. Congratulations to all our graduates”, said Paul.
