Port Elizabeth Flying Squad members recovered a stolen delivery van abandoned with its driver locked at the back.

"The vehicle was found parked at the KwaNobuhle Multi-Purpose Sports Complex, just outside KwaNobuhle, in Uitenhage, on Thursday," said police spokesperson, Sergeant Majola Nkohli.

"On Thursday, around 10:15, the 33-year-old driver of the delivery van alleged that he was walking to his van when two armed men accosted him outside a bank in Caledon Street, Uitenhage."

Sgt Nkohli said that at gunpoint, the driver was ushered into the back of the van and they locked him inside.

"The two suspects drove off with him locked in at the back. It is said that the two suspects drove to the KwaNobuhle Multi-Purpose Sports Complex, where a white Corsa bakkie with two masked men were waiting," he described.

"At the Complex, the suspects off-loaded eleven boxes with cellphones into a getaway vehicle (Corsa bakkie).

"The suspects, before fleeing the scene with a getaway bakkie, again locked the victim at the back of the van."

He said that moments later, through the assistance of a tracking company, the van was recovered and the victim was freed without any injuries.

"Police have opened a case of hijacking for investigation and are urging anyone with information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects to contact the nearest police station or to anonymously share information via Crime Stop at 08600 10111."
