Duo arrested with illegal firearm after high speed police car chase in East London

Two suspects are expected in court soon after they were busted by alert East London police for illegal firearm possession following a high speed police car chase.

"At approximately 23:00 on Sunday, the East London K9 Unit's W/O Swanepoel and W/O Flemming noticed a Nissan Livina standing in the dark on the N2 Highway other side the second Brakfontein turnoff," described police spokesperson, W/O Hazel Mqala.

"On further inspection the two occupants informed the members that their vehicle had broken down, but someone was on the way to assist them.

"The members then kept patrolling and noticed the same vehicle heading towards East London two minutes later, no other vehicles around that could have assisted them with their 'breakdown'."

She said that when the members put the blue light and siren on a high speed chase ensued.

"Members of Beacon Bay SAPS blocked the vehicle at the Beacon Bay offramp," W/O Mqala added.

"The vehicle was searched and a 9mm Browning pistol with 5 live rounds was found under the front passenger seat.

"A serial number has been grinded off."

The two suspects, aged 23 years and 29 years old, has been arrested and the suspect will appear in the East London Magistrate's Court soon.
