Dutywa man jailed for 20 years for brutally raping teen
Justice was swift as the Butterworth Regional Magistrate's Court on Thursday convicted and sentenced a 26-year-old man, Sikholiwe Gwantshu, to 20 years in prison for raping a 19-year-old woman early this year.
According to police spokesperson, Capt Jackson Manatha, the allegation is that the victim was walking with her female friend on Saturday 22 April 2017, at about 17:15, at Mbewana Location, Zundwana Village, in Dutywa.
"They came across with the accused, who was armed with a knife. He instructed both women to undress," Captain Manatha said.
"The other woman managed to run away, but the victim was no so lucky as she was raped by the accused.
"The brother of the victim came and found the accused still busy raping his sister."
He said that the accused managed to run away when he saw the brother of the victim.
The accused was later traced and arrested by Butterworth Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS).
Eastern Cape police have welcomed the sentence and warned that all those, who continue to sexually abuse women and children will be dealt with.
