The Butterworth Regional Magistrate's Court sentenced a 25-year-old man to undergo 40 years imprisonment for raping his 13-year-old cousin sister.

"The 25 year old man was sentenced on Friday at Butterworth Regional Magistrate's Court," said police spokesperson, Captain Jackson Manatha.

"It is alleged that the accused went to the homestead of the victim on 13 November 2015 at about 11h00 at Mthuvi Locality, Thaleni Village, Dutywa.

"He found the victim alone and raped her."

A case of rape was later registered at Dutywa Police Station.

"The case was later handed over to Butterworth Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS)," Capt Manatha said.

"The accused was traced and arrested. The accused cannot be identified as he is related to the victim to protect the identity of the victim."

Butterworth Cluster Commander, Brigadier Ngangema Xakavu, has welcomed the stiff sentence handed to the accused as it will serve as a lesson to the cruel men who are raping women and children.
