Early morning shack fire in George claims one, leaves scores homeless

The George Fire Brigade attended a shack fire on Wednesday morning, at about at 04:51, in Touwsranten where one person died and 34 people had to be relocated.

"They responded and found multiple informal structures burning in Begonia Street, Touwsranten. The fire was contained and extinguished," said George Municipality Spokesperson, Debra Sauer.

"The Brigade found the burned body of one male among the debris. The person is known to the occupants and is in his mid-twenties. No other injuries were reported to us.The police were on the scene."

She said that the number of inhabitants in the shacks were 15, 12 and 7 people respectively.

"According to information received there was only 1 child under the age of five years under the occupants that were relocated," Sauer added.

"The cause of the fire is not known yet and will now be part of the police investigation.

"Officials from the housing department were on the scene and informed us that arrangements for the people have been made to temporarily house them at the community hall."
