East London cop who shot and killed wife at school expected in court

An East London police officer, who allegedly shot and killed his wife a school on Friday morning, is expected in court on Monday.

Meanwhile, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) in East London is investigating a case of murder following the incident that took place at Voorpos Primary School.

"It is alleged that an on-duty police constable, from  the East London Cluster, shot and killed his wife on the school premises near the entrance gate to the school," said police spokesperson, Captain Nkosikho Mzuku.

The shooting happened in full view of the school staff and management during an SGB formal introduction session at the school.

She was declared dead at the scene by police and paramedics.

"The police member is in custody," Capt Mzuku.

"The circumstances surrounding the incident is unclear at the moment."

He said that the investigation continues.

Meanwhile, the Eastern Cape MEC for Education, Mandla Makupula, said that he is saddened by the passing on of the woman, who was a Voorpos Primary School Governing Body member.

He said that Buffalo City Education District Director, Edgar Klaasen, has arranged counselling for those, who were at the school.

The department said that the only confirmed casualty of the incident is the SGB member.

MEC Makupula sent his condolences to the family of the deceased.

"Our fratenity has been robbed of a selfless individual who sacrificed her own time just to ensure that our communities participate meaningfully in transforming our education to meet the societal needs. May her soul rest in eternal peace. I hope her family will find solace in the Almighty," he said.
