East London house robber to serve a long sentence in jail

East London - The East London Regional Court handed a hefty sentence to a 29-year-old man, Sibongile Mavalentiya. He is to serve 15 years for house robbery, 10 years for possession of unlicensed firearm and five years for possession of ammunition, sentences will go concurrently.

"This follows an incident where four armed men stormed at a businessman’s residence at Dorchester Heights, East London, on the morning of 06 May 2018," said police spokesperson, Captain Mluleki Mbi.

"They blocked him in his gateway and forced him back into the house. They then beat him up and demanded safe keys and money.

"They manages to take cash, foreign currency, laptop and cellphone.

"Fortunately, the businessman managed to activate a panic alarm during the struggle."

Capt Mbi said that security officers arrived on the scene and a gun battle ensued and the police were called in.

"Three suspects managed to flee in a getaway vehicle leaving the other one behind. Police found him hiding in the bushes nearby. A 9mm pistol and car keys were found in his possession."

He later led the police to a vehicle parked in the shopping mall at Nahoon and it came out that the vehicle was hired.

"Before this incident, there had been a number of reported robberies targeted at Chinese businesses and residences, which became a concern to the police."

The Mdantsane SAPS Cluster Commander, Major General Henry Vos, has commended the tireless and dedicated efforts of the investigating officer, Sergeant Zukile Soli for breaking the backbone of this notorious syndicate.
