East London police Sgt arrested for involvement in car guard's murder

An expeditious disciplinary investigation has been launched into the alleged involvement of  a police sergeant in the murder of a car guard this weekend in Buffalo Flats, East London.

“We were shocked and greatly disappointed with the arrest of a Sergeant from Keimouth for Murder," said Eastern Cape police provincial commissioner Lieutenant-General Liziwe Ntshinga.

"Our Code of Conduct demands that all SAPS members shall at all times uphold the Constitution and the law, act with integrity  and uphold and protect the fundamental rights of every person whilst acting in a manner that is accountable, respectful, honest and transparent.

"This alleged type of behaviour is condemned in the strongest possible way and I have instructed that this matter being investigated in terms of the SAPS disciplinary processes,  as speedily as possible."

She added; "The criminal investigation is conducted by IPID and this may take some time before it is concluded and the case put on the court role.  The SAPS will in the meantime  conduct our own internal investigation and formulate charges  in terms of SAPS Discipline Regulations."

Accordingly, this  means that the SAPS' internal investigation should conclude long before the criminal case is finalised.

"If the member is found guilty, one of the sanctions which may  be imposed, is dismissal," said police spokesperson, Colonel Michelle Matroos.

"The member is currently on suspension by operation of law due to his incarceration. He will do a formal application for bail today and if it is  granted to him and he is released from custody,  the next step in the disciplinary process will be followed  and the required documentation relating to further possible suspension will be prepared for consideration."
