East London resident keeps city’s streets clean from own pocket

Having had enough of the litter lying around in the East London area, Bev van Welie took it upon herself to clean it up, instead of just complaining to the municipality. That was last year in February and she is still going...

Van Welie, a farmer, employs one person and is paying him out of her own pocket.

“I saw the litter in Dochester Heights as I was driving along there. I asked one of the men, who work on our farm to help find someone, who could clean the area”.

That was when she met Vuyo Gqala, now helps her to clean the streets of different East London suburbs such as Dolchester Heights, Selborne, Vincent and Nahoon.

Buffalo City Municipality Councilor, Isabel Thompson, commended van Welie for deciding to get up and do something about the litter.

“They are doing a sterling job with keeping those areas clean and I urge them to keep it up. She has been paying Vuyo out of her own pocket and I Really hope that she is able to get more assistance,” said Thompson.

If you are willing to help van Welie keep East London clean – simply donate black plastic bags or assist her with Gqala’s wages. You can call her on 083 275 4088.
