East London robbers receive hefty jail sentences

The East London Regional Court on Wednesday convicted and sentenced 27-year-old Lonwabo Velaphi and 30-year-old Luyanda Sakathi for robbery with aggravating circumstances to serve imprisonment for 15 years.

"This follows a robbery of a liquor store at Amalinda in East London on 10 September 2016 where seven suspects armed with fire arms stormed the outlet, held the staff at gunpoint and made off with liquor and cash," said police spokesperson,  Captain Mluleki Mbi.

In a separate case, 30-year-old Akhona Stofu was convicted and sentenced to undergo 15 years of imprisonment for robbery.

"This was after he held a woman who was on her way to work near Cambridge railway station at knife point and robbed her of her handbag which contained a cellphone," Capt Mbi said.

"The fact that he had three previous convictions on the same offence was the aggravating circumstance to hand down this hefty sentence."

Cambridge station commander, Brigadier Pumla Mdlankomo has commended the sterling work by both investigating officers, Detective Warrant Officer Raoul Petzer and Detective Constable Siyanda Tyokolo respectively.
