East London's Fleet Street upgrades expected to enter second phase on Tuesday

The Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality (BCMM) on Friday said that it expects the contractor working on the Fleet Street upgrades in East London to complete work on the northern side of the street - that is between Station Street and Oxford Street, over the weekend.

According to Buffalo City Municipality Communication Manager, Samkelo Ngwenya, the said section would have been tarred and open to traffic by Monday.

 “A two way traffic for east and westbound, towards former Transkei and towards the airport direction traffic will be in provided,” said Ngwenya.

 He added that, the contractor will then close the southern side, commence with excavations and layer works as of Tuesday, with completion of this works anticipated to be achieved by the second week of September 2017.  

 “Then thereafter the works will move to Zone 1 works zone , from Oxford to Pontoon road with road works planned completion to be complete by December 2017,” said Ngwenya.

He further added that, BCM advice motorists close to the works beginning accordingly on this stage with finer details of planned works and traffic accommodation.

 “With the schools reopening next week and volumes of traffic expected to pick up; we urge motorists to exercise patience, wake up a little bit early,” he said.

Ngwenya concluded that BCM will be deploying point’s men accordingly.
