Bhisho - The Eastern Cape Department of Transport said it learnt with shock and sadness of the untimely passing of its Chief Financial Officer, Denzel Skweyiya on Friday night.

Skweyiya died in a vehicle crash which occurred on the N2 between King William’s Town and Mdantsane when his Toyota sedan collided with a BMW at about 18:45. He tragically lost his life on the scene and the driver of the second vehicle escaped with minor injuries, the Department said.

"The entire Transport family mourns Mr Skweyiya’s loss."

Transport, Safety and Liaison MEC, Ms Weziwe Tikana-Gxothiwe has on behalf of the department extended condolences to the Skweyiya Family.

“We have lost one of the seasoned members of the Provincial administration and we will forever be indebted to him for the role he has played to improve the lives of the people of the province,” she said.

Skweyiya joined the Transport family 20 years ago as the department’s first Finance Director and later rose to the ranks of Chief Financial Officer.

At the time of his death, he was the longest-serving CFO in the Eastern Cape Provincial Government. He has presided over the finances of the department which received unqualified audit outcomes for over 7 years.

“He was a master in his art with a wealth of experience in public finance management. This is a great loss to the department and to me personally. As a newly appointed HOD, I was looking forward to steer this ship with a seasoned servant of his caliber,” said Head of Department, Mzilindile Mafani.

“We are heartbroken and grieve that our friend and colleague, has passed away. Our thoughts, prayers go to his wife and children and all the extended family."

Skweyiya has been a much-loved and respected leader in the department, his decency, calmness and wit were always making things lighter even in the most difficult situations. He will be terribly missed.

"His passing serves as crude reminder that the department has not won the fight against the rising number of road crashes."
