Eastern Cape police welcome lengthy sentences for cop killers

Eastern Cape police have welcomed the lengthy sentences handed down to a former Warrant Officer and his accomplice after they were convicted of brutally shooting and killing the Station Commander of Elliotdale Lt Col Nomalizo Dukumbana on 17 May 2013.

Phumzile Ngqayimbana, 46, and his co-accused Siyamcela Ntshitshi, 38, were each sentenced by Mthatha Deputy Judge President, Zamani Nhlangulele, in the Mthatha High Court on Monday, to life imprisonment for murder plus six years for possession of illegal firearms and three years for unlawful possession of ammunition. The sentences will run concurrently.

The Eastern Cape Acting Provincial Commissioner, Maj Gen Andre Swart, welcomed the judgement and said, "This is a lesson to all that no one is above the law."

"We will forever remember our colleague who was brutally killed by her subordinates. May her family find peace after this judgement," he added.
