Eastern Cape Super 12 inter-club rugby wrap-up (28th January)

The Eastern Cape Super 12 rugby competition unfolded to its second round of fixtures last week, January 28th, with six representative club sides from Eastern Province and six from Border, battling it out to claim the title.

The six EP clubs are: Gardens (Uitenhage), Parks (PE), Springrose (PE), Despatch (Despatch), Harlequins (PE) and Progress (Uitenhage) – the former three teams being placed in Group A, with the latter three placed in Group B.

The six Border clubs are: Breakers (Queenstown), Cambridge (East London), Swallows (Mdantsane), Buffaloes (East London), EL Police (East London) and Walter Sisulu University (Mthatha) – again with the former three clubs placed in Group A and the latter three placed in Group B.

Each group of six then play a round-robin phase to determine the top two for qualification to the semi-finals on the 4th of March 2017. The final will be the following week on the 11th of March.

Last week in Group A, the Swallows and Springrose had a bye, as the other two matches in the group saw Parks beat Cambridge 27-10 and Gardens thrashing Breakers 55-5.

In the Group B clashes, EL Police beat WSU 25-3, Progress beat Buffaloes 17-3, Parks beat Cambridge 27-10 and the Harlequins beat Despatch 37-27.

After just two rounds, Gardens top Group A with six group points and Progress, the only unbeaten side, top Group B with nine group points.
