ECape police boss issues stern warning to violent Kirkwood protesters

Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Liziwe Ntshinga, issued a stern warning to violent protesters in Kirkwood on Tuesday evening.

"This comes after protesters torched at least one confirmed orchard store and three tractors were torched," said Sergeant Majola Nkohli. 

"On Tuesday, at around 18:00, it is alleged that a group of about 200 workers blocked route R336 extension leading to Moses Mabhida area, Kirkwood with stones and burning tyres."

Sgt Nkohli added that it is said that the group thereafter dispersed.

"Police later received reports of attacks on orchards in the area. At this stage, no case dockets have been opened, but at least one confirmed orchard store was set alight," he described.

"Three tractors were also torched. Currently, the situation is under control and being monitored by different policing units. There is high police presence in the area. Motorists are advised to avoid driving towards Moses Mabhida area."

Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Liziwe Ntshinga, has issued a stern warning to protesters.

"We view these actions as opportunistic criminal elements that are going to be dealt with harshly."
