ECDOE to engage Dept of Transport after three learners die in bus accident

The Head of Department at the Eastern Cape Department of Education, Themba Kojana, on Monday said that he learnt with sadness of the passing on of three learners, when the bus they were travelling in to Ntshilini Senior Secondary School, was involved in an accident in the morning.

"Our prayers are with the families who lost their children during this accident, we hope they find solace in the Lord, God in this difficult time of their lives," said Kojana. 

According to the Eastern Cape Department of Education spokesperson, Malibongwe Mtima, the learners were traveling in a 75-seater scholar transport bus when this accident occurred.

“The driver lost control of the bus and it ended up leaving the road and fell from the bridge commonly known as Mdumbi in Ngqeleni, at the OR Tambo Coastal Education district,” described Mtima.

He added that some of the learners traveling on the bus jumped out through windows, however, the three learners passed away.

“All learners involved in this accident were rushed to Canzibe Hospital for medical attention,” said Mtima, adding that police were called to the scene after the accident.

The Eastern Cape Department of Education will be despatching a team of psychologists to help counsel the learners while a team is enrooted to visit and inform all parents of the deceased learners.

The Department will also engage the Department of Transport to verify the roadworthiness of the bus.
