EFF MPs walk out of Malusi Gigaba budget speech before he even starts

Chaos erupted in Parliament on Wednesday afternoon as the Economic Freedom Front (EFF) tried to stop Finance Minister, Malusi Gigaba, from delivering his first midterm budget speech.

The drama began when EFF MP, Floyd Shivambu, stated that they would not allow Gigaba to speak because of his alleged links to the controversial Gupta family.

“We cannot allow a Gupta boy to address this house,” stated Shivambu.

He was joined by Mbuyiseni Ndlozi, who claimed that Gigaba is the sole reason why the country is battling State Capture.

Shivambu then declared that there would be no House sitting if Gigaba was allowed to continue with his budget speech.

Not even two minutes into the start of the proceedings, the Speaker of the House, Baleka Mbete, requested that the Seargent at Arms escort Shivambu and Ndlozi out of the house, which created even more chaos.

The members of the EFF were adamant that they did not want Gigaba to give his speech, stating that if MPs allowed him to speak, they will be complacent to corruption.

"Parliament can't be seen to legitimise what is essentially a Gupta stooge," says the EFF's Ndlozi.

Mbete said she will not be "lectured to" by Shivambu, as she asks for calm to let Gigaba's speech start.

After Mbete threatened to call the Protection Services to help escort the members of the EFF out, Shivambu stated that they were leaving the House as they did not want to be a part of the proceedings.

“We are going to leave you to continue your corruption and listening to a corrupt person. We are not going to form part of this nonsense,” shouted Shivambu.

All EFF members have since left the house - after delaying proceedings by about 20 minutes.
