Efforts to break World Record by raising six tonnes of school supplies

The City of Champions Legacy Project, the Boardwalk Casino and Entertainment World, Michelle Campbell Publicity, Your Money and Oracle Media are pleased to announce their collaboration in bringing to you a weekend of festivities in honour and celebration of the late icon and city’s namesake.

Celebrations kicked off on Wednesday and will be carrying on through to Saturday, taking place at the Boardwalk Casino and Entertainment World.

Mandela Day was launched in recognition of Nelson Mandela’s birthday on 18 July, 2009 via a unanimous decision of the UN General Assembly. The day was inspired by a call Nelson Mandela made one year earlier – for the next generation to take up the burden of leadership in addressing the world’s social injustices when he famously said “It is in your hands now”.

Whilst many festivities are set to take place over the next few days, we’re calling upon all NMB residents to bring down any school supplies including desks, chairs, stationary, books, etc. that they might go purchase or that they might have at home.

The official School Supplies donation will start at 12pm on Friday and will run until 12pm, Saturday; thus, giving residents 24 hours in which to make their donation. There will be a live feed available to track the amount of school supplies that will be donated in this 24-hour period.

We wish to break the previous Guinness Book of World Record for the largest donation of school supplies in 24 hours which was 4,019kg and was achieved by Alanoud Alzaid and Nama Charity in Makkah, Saudi Arabia, on 5 March 2015. The City of Champions target is 6,700 kg donated in 24 hours.

In order to achieve this goal we need a large variety of school items to be purchased and donated. We have requested from the various tenants at the Boardwalk Casino and Entertainment World to assist with this initiative, where we can have ready-made sets/packs made up and sold in their shops with a large box outside each outlet for donations. All goods will be collected, weighed and distributed to the 10 chosen underprivileged schools in and around Nelson Mandela Bay.

12pm on Saturday, 18 July 2015 will mark the conclusion of the School Suppliers Donation World Record and at 15:25 an announcement of the Results of the Schools Suppliers World Record Attempt will be made by City of Champions’ President.

Join the City of Champions in bringing together Nelson Mandela Bay in celebration of the legacy this great man instilled in all of us.
