Elderly Bethelsdorp man an unlikely hero after chasing robbers and apprehending one

An 64-year-old Port Elizabeth man became an unlikely hero of the day after he chased after two robbery suspects and managed to apprehend one of them on Wednesday after witnessing a robbery.

"It is alleged that at about 11:30, on Wednesday morning, the complainant -  aged 28, was serving two customers at his spaza shop in Harker Crescent Ext 22 in Bethelsdorp, Port Elizabeth, when one of them pulled ot a firearm," said police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu.

"They then demanded the gate keys.

"They unlocked the gate and entered on the other side of the counter."

Col Naidu said that it is further alleged that cigarettes, cash and a cellphone was taken by the suspects during the robbery.

"An elderly man residing nearby witnessed the suspects running from the shop and chased after them," she said.

"He apprehended a 16-year-old teenager.

"The cigarettes, a toy gun and some cash was recovered."

She said that the youth will be detained on a charge of business robbery and will appear in court soon.

Since he is a minor, the matter will be handled under the Child Justice Act, which among other things, seeks to "heal children and those who were affected by a child’s action, encourages forgiveness and rehabilitation and looks after the needs and rights of children and victims".

Mount Road SAPS Cluster Commander, Maj Gen Thembisile Patekile, commended the elderly man for his vigilance and brave stance against the suspects.

"As a community, we need to look out for each other and stand together against crime and criminals within our communities," commented Maj Gen Patekile.
