Elderly George couple receive new home following fire

For an elderly couple of Zone 1, Thembalethu, in George, Christmas came early this year when the Minister of Human Settlements, Western Cape handed them their title deed for their new home last week.

"Minister Bonginkosi Madikizela thanked all the role players, sponsors, Cllr Melvin Naik, the Executive Mayor of George, Cllr David Willemse, Portfolio Councillor for Human Settlements and Cllr Kholisile Langa, Ward Councillor who were instrumental in the building of the house," described George Municipality spokesperson, Debra Sauer.

"Dr Ivan Meyer, Minister of Finance in the Western Cape also attended the handover.

"Construction of the couples new home started on the 24th July 2018 following the loss of their home in a fire. Mr Teke and Mrs Elizabeth Zakade are two elderly pensioners who lived in a bungalow at 175 Ntaka Street, Zone 1 in Thembalethu, with their three grandchildren.

"After the fire they had to move in with their in-laws who reside in Borchards. The couple, who are on chronic medication, struggled during this tragedy which placed them in a financial predicament."

She said that in an attempt to assist the elderly couple through public and private partnership, the following companies were on board to assist with the project financially: HAS Consulting Pty (Developer),Zuksem Projects (Thembalethu Youth Contractor),Tusk Construction Supplier Services, Builders Warehouse(National) and Standard Bank. The sponsors also made sure the couple received furniture and appliances for their new home.

Ward Councillor Kholisile Langa from Ward 13 where the elderly couple lives, has been an advocate for them liaising with Mr. Horatius Strydom (HAS Consulting) to ensure that the couple is assisted and that their needs are met.

Mr. Strydom, who is also a pioneer in this project, have been making arrangements to ensure the success of this project and were in contact with the Minister’s office.

Sauer added that Mr Teke said they were so excited to move into their new home, they could hardly sleep the night before.
