A 28-year-old man is expected in court on Tuesday after he was arrested by Elliotdale police for allegedly fatally shooting his girlfriend.

"It is alleged that the couple had a misunderstanding on Friday at Elliotdale town during the day," said police spokesperson, Captain Jackson Manatha.

"The suspect took the cellphone of the victim. He returned the cellphone on Friday, at about 20:40, to the homestead of the girlfriend.

"He then phoned the relative of the girlfriend asking her to come and fetch her cellphone. When the girlfriend went to fetch her cellphone, she was shot several times on her upper body and died at the scene."

Captain Manatha said that the murder was committed at Pongoma Village, Elliotdale.

"The suspect was arrested on Monday. He is appearing before the Elliotdale Magistrate's Court on Tuesday on a murder charge."

He said that the deceased was identified as Amanda Bono, aged 24.

Butterworth Cluster Commander, Brigadier Ngangema Xakavu, condemned the cold blooded murder of a defenceless woman.

He praised Elliotdale Police for their swift actions in arresting the suspect.
