Eskom implementing Stage 3 load shedding from 8am until 11pm on Wednesday

Eskom will again implement Stage 3 rotational load shedding from 08:00 on Wednesday morning until 23:00.

This is will be the fourth straight day of Eskom load shedding since the power utility re-introduced load shedding after the December holidays and even moved to Stage 4 on Monday.

On Tuesday, Eskom implemented Stage 3 load shedding, which it cancelled at 22:14 at night. The power utility had said in an early morning statement that a number of generating units were still out of service due to breakdowns.

In a statement at night, it said despite four units (totaling 1 675MW) returning to service as planned and some replenishment of diesel supplies arriving, its water and diesel emergency reserves were still "very low".

Eskom expects an additional 600MW to be added to the grid on Wednesday, but there was a risk a Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) led strike scheduled for Wednesday would affect operations.

Thus, according to Eskom spokesperson, Khulu Phasiwe: "Due to the shortage of generating capacity, Eskom will continue to implement stage 3 loadshedding today, 13 February 2019, from 08:00 until 23:00.

"Please switch off all non-essential appliances in order to reduce pressure on the national grid."

The power utility warned consumers to treat all electrical points as live during load shedding.

Eskom will continue to update customers on load shedding

It said that Stage 3 calls for 3000MW to be rotationally loadshed nationally at a given period. Load shedding is conducted rotationally as a measure of last resort to protect the power system from a total collapse or blackout.

“We continue to appeal to residents and businesses to use electricity sparingly during this period. Please switch off geysers as well as all non-essential lighting and electricity appliances to assist in reducing demand.”

For Eskom customers, these schedules are available on the Eskom website (http://loadshedding.eskom.co.za).
