Eskom to implement Stage 2 load shedding from 08:00am on Thursday

Eskom says it will implement Stage 2 rotational loadshedding from 08:00 until 22:00 on Thursday - for the fifth consecutive day after it re-introduced load shedding over the weekend.

The power utility said that strides have been made in restoring generating capacity hence that was not need for Stage 3 load shedding as seen on Tuesday and Wednesday.

“While losing all three units totaling 823MW, one unit of 600MW was successfully returned to service on Wednesday as planned," Eskom explained.

"While there has been some improvement, the power system continues to remain vulnerable.

"Should Eskom continue to experience significant unplanned generator trips, this could impact the magnitude and risk of load shedding."

Eskom will update customers on load shedding

It said that Stage 2 calls for 2000MW to be rotationally loadshed nationally at a given period. Loadshedding is conducted rotationally as a measure of last resort to protect the power system from a total collapse or blackout.

“We continue to appeal to residents and businesses to use electricity sparingly during this period. Please switch off geysers as well as all non-essential lighting and electricity appliances to assist in reducing demand.”

For Eskom customers, these schedules are available on the Eskom website (http://loadshedding.eskom.co.za).
