By Lauren Jonas - Jan 10, 2019

As thousands of learners started the new school year across the country on Wednesday, Port Elizabeth parents and their kids shared their excitement at starting the year after a well-deserved holiday break.

There were emotions at school gates especially where parents were dropping off their first-graders with their teachers.

Parents, who spoke to RNEWS said that it was the start of their routines – get the kids, up, feed them, prepare their lunch packs, ensure their properly dressed, drop them off and return to pick them up later in the day.

After school activities and homework drills also form part of the routines.

‘Excited that kids are going back to school’

“Best part of being back at school is seeing my friends,” said Andla Xoli, a local Grade 7 pupil.

Just down the road, reality dawns for high school students who also got back today.

“Waking up was a struggle but definitely looking forward to reconnecting with friend,” said Bathandwa Singeni, another local learner.

Due to the excellent matric results for the Eastern Cape, learners and educators are hopeful for the new school year.
