Fiat aiming to dish out a few knocks with new Fullback

Set to cause a stir in the hotly contested bakkie segment, the commercial division of Fiat, known as Fiat Professional, has officially lifted the wraps off its brand new Fullback with sales set to commence on July first.

First shown at the Dubai International Motor Show in November last year, the Fullback sees the Italian automaker entering the one-ton light commercial vehicle segment for the first time, with the newcomer being touted as an “unrivalled working hero” specially designed to “deal with any situation it faces”.

Developed in corporation with Mitsubishi and sharing most of its fundamentals bar looks with the yet-to-be-launched Triton, the Fullback line-up consists of one single and two double cab models, with the former making use of a petrol engine only and the latter two a single turbodiesel in different states of tune.

Measuring 5 220 mm in length with the loadbox compartment coming in at 2 265 mm, the single cab remains the sole workhorse model for now with motivation coming from a 2.4-litre petrol that makes 97 kW and 202 N.m of torque. A five-speed manual gearbox drives the rear wheels although four-wheel drive is likely to become available at a later stage.

Making up the double cab range, the Fullback makes use of the outgoing Triton’s 2.5-litre turbodiesel engine with the unit producing 100 kW and 324 N.m of torque in the base LX, and 131 kW and 400 N.m of torque in the flagship SX. As with the single cab, a five-speed manual drives the rear wheels in the case of the LX, with the SX being offered with four-wheel drive only. A five-speed automatic will be added later.

Depending on the model, the Fullback also sees the introduction of a dedicated line of optional accessories under the Fiat-Chrysler’s Group’s Mopar division, which a front nudge bar, side steps, roll bar, rear bumper step, a Bosal two bar, Thule roof rails, Fullback branded kick plates, foglights with daytime running LED’s, rear parking sensors, and chrome plated side mouldings.

A three year / 100 000 km warranty and five year / 100 000 km service plan is standard on all models.
