Fight against crime gets boost with opening of Bethelsdorp Metro Police Precinct

The fight against drug trafficking and abuse, gangsterism, domestic violence, reckless driving and general lawlessness took a giant step forward when the Executive Mayor of Nelson Mandela Bay, Cllr Athol Trollip, opened a first-in-its-kind police precinct in the Northern Areas, Bloemendal on Wednesday.

This follows a promise made by the Executive Mayor at the Metro Police Passing Out Parade held in March this year, namely that the Northern Areas would be a one of the focus areas for the Metro Police, working under the wing of the South African Police Services.

Fifty Metro Police Officers will work from the Bloemendal precinct. They will launch their own crime-fighting initiatives, enforce municipal bylaws, set up road blocks focusing on vehicle and driver fitness, and undertake joint crime-fighting operations with the SAPS and government entities, like Home Affairs.

Speaking at the opening, a visibly excited Executive Mayor said: "This is a historic occasion. We are here to stop crime. These communities have been suffering for too long. We are opening this fully fledged facility in a crime hot-spot, where people, including children, have lost their lives in senseless gangster wars".

The Executive Mayor sent a strong warning to criminals that their time of terrorising the community was coming to an end.

"We embarked on an intensive Integrated Development Plan (IDP) where our community made it clear to us that they want a safe and caring City. That is a commitment we have made, and we must deliver on that," said Executive Mayor Trollip.

Next week, a similar precinct will be opened in Uitenhage, KwaNobuhle. More are expected to be opened across the Metro in the next three to five years.

A community member, Boet Broad, was equally excited about the opening of the facility.

"Crime is a serious problem in our communities. The Metro Police came at the perfect time. We are also pleased that the precinct has been built right in the heart of Bethelsdorp," said Trollip.

"We promise to build a strong partnership with the Metro Police so that the Metro Police, working with South African Police Services can make the Metro a safer place."
