Fire incident at Pep Store along Govan Mbeki Avenue

A morning fire at a Pep Store, located along Govan Mbeki Avenue, in the Port Elizabeth CBD, delayed business for more than three hours at the store as well as the adjacent Whitfiled Bakery.

Workers were forced to stand outside on the street in the rain as the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Fire Brigade and emergency services entered both buildings to assess the damage caused by the fire and evacuate staff.

None of the employees at the stores as well as the firefighters were willing to comment about what exactly had happened.

“Nobody is saying anything. I saw firefighters, police cars and people standing, so I thought I should just stand here too,” a shopper, who didn’t want to be named, told RNEWS.

Probed for comment, Managers at the two stores also refused to comment.

The Pep Stores area manager said that she didn’t know anything about the fire and were also still awaiting for a comment from the fire department to comfirm how the fire could have started and how much damage was caused.

By 11’oclock, the Whitfield Bakery employees had gone back into their store to resume business.
