Since Thursday last week, Port Elizabeth police have confiscated eight firearms and arrested six people in separate incidents for illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.

"The latest arrest was effected on Monday, at about 15:00, when members of Mount Road Cluster Operational Command Centre (OCC) followed up on information received of firearms at a house in St Jude Street in Ext 28 in Bethelsdorp," said police spokesperson, Col Priscilla Naidu.

"Two revolvers were found in the bedroom and a 35-year-old male was arrested and detained.

"One firearm was reported stolen in Humewood, Port Elizabeth, in June 2018 and the other firearm, the serial number has been filed off."

She said that the suspect is expected to appear in court soon.

Mount Road SAPSCluster Commander, Maj Gen Patekile, has urged the community to continue to work with the police.

"Together, we can rid our areas of criminal elements. The confiscation of these firearms and the arrest of the suspects is an indication that the police is serious on creating a safe and secure environment for the people in the northern areas of Port Elizabeth," he added.
