Firearm stolen in PE recovered in Uitenhage, suspect to appear in court

An intelligence driven operation in Uitenhage led to the arrest of a 35-year-old male on Tuesday night for the illegal possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

"Members from the Operational Command Centre in Uitenhage conducted a search operation in Siyo Crescent, Kwanobuhle, at about 23:30, on Tuesday night, which resulted in the recovery of a Norinco 9mm and two magazines that contained 18 rounds," explained police spokesperson, Captain Gerda Swart.

"Further investigations revealed that the firearm was stolen during a burglary in Kabega Park during June 2018."

Acting Uitenhage Cluster Commander, Brigadier Ronald Koll, commended police officials for the good work which led to the arrest of the suspect and the removal of an illegal firearm off the streets.

Brig Koll said: “This success can be attributed to our network of informers combined with targeted and effective deployment of our operational resources that are in line with our Back-to-Basics approach”.

The 35-year-old male is due to appear in the Kwanobule Magistrate's Court on Thursday on the above charge.

"The South African Police Service appeal to the community to work with the SAPS in reducing crime by providing valuable information that will lead to the arrest of suspects, the tracing of illegal firearms and the recovery of stolen property," Capt Swart said.
