Five expected in PE court for illegal firearm and ammunition possession

Five suspects are expected in court on Monday after they were arrested by SAPS Technical Response Team (TRT) Unit members from Port Elizabeth for possession of unlicensed firearms - two pistols with 10 rounds of ammunition.

"The suspects namely four men aged 21, 26, 27, 31 and a 25-year-old woman were arrested at on Sunday, at about 00:15, along N2 road near Bika Township, Butterworth," said police spokesperson, Captain Jackson Manatha.

"The suspects were driving towards Butterworth direction when they were pulled off the road.

"One firearm had eight rounds of ammunition whilst the other fire arm had two rounds of ammunition."

Capt Manatha said that the firearms will be taken for ballistic tests to establish if they were not used in the commission of crime.

"The suspects will appear before the Butterworth Magistrate's Court on Monday on charges of possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition."

Butterworth Cluster Commander, Brigadier Trevor Mey, commended the TRT Unit for their swift actions and good work as they have prevented a string of crimes following the arrests.
