Five suspects arrested for Amalinda supermarket robbery, firearms seized

An intelligence-driven operation has led to the arrest of five suspects, aged between 23 and 37 years, and the recovery of three firearms and ammunition.

"This follows an incident where five suspects stormed a supermarket at Amalinda, East London, on Monday, and held staff at gunpoint, demanding cash," said police spokesperson, Captain Mluleki Mbi.

"They made off with an undisclosed amount of cash in a getaway vehicle, no shots fired and no injuries."

Arrest brings relief to East London police commander

He said that the arrest comes as a relief to the Cambridge station commander, Btigadier Pumla Mdlankomo, who has been spending sleepless nights since this incident and has praised the swift action of the team that she has tasked to tackle this case.

"They will all appear before the East London Magistrate's court on Monday, facing charges of business robbery and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition," Capt Mbi said.

"Some of the suspects have already been linked to other crimes through fingerprints like house robbery and theft and our investigators are working hard on linking others."
