Five Tips to Tilt the Threat of Tobacco

The fact that tobacco use is the most important risk factor for cancer usually falls on deaf ears to those who support the habit, but research by CANSA stating that approximately 19% (7.2 million) of the South African population are smokers, is increasingly alarming.

To mark World No Tobacco Day on 31 May, and to raise awareness of the risk factors associated with tobacco and cancer, Eurolab - the largest generic oncology company in Southern Africa - encourages those still smoking to take a positive step toward a healthier lifestyle with five plausible tips to kick the habit once and for all.

“Quitting smoking is one of the most preventative causes of cancer and will reduce your risk of lung, oesophagus, larynx, mouth or throat cancer to name a few. The risk factors of smoking far outweigh the potential harmful effects caused by the chemicals found in cigarettes, which have been shown to damage our DNA - and damaged cells can eventually cause cancer,”says Lynne du Toit,Eurolab Group CEO.

Create accountability

Telling friends and family that you’re quitting the tobacco habit is likely to decreasing your chances of giving into temptation. Sharing your experience gives room for people around you to act be a good support system through the journey.

Plan a quit date

Instead of going “cold turkey”, plan ahead with a support system already in place and research the best method for you that could aid in the quitting process. Whether it’s asking advice from your GP, researching hypnosis or even downloading a smartphone app, being in control could generate positive outcomes.

Bin any hidden stashes

Eliminate temptation by clearing your home, car cubbyhole and workplace drawers of leftover cartons or boxes that may be stashed away.

Find a destress replacement

When you experience a craving for whatever the reason, prepare an alternative as an avenue of stress relief. This can be as simple as carrying a bottle of water with you to drink, exercising, tidying up the house or even gardening.

Don't let a relapse discourage you

Learning what works for you on your journey is key, and you shouldn’t let a relapse break your confidence. Each attempt to kick the tobacco habit is a step in the right direction.
