Four killed after taxi plunges into river bed in Willowvale this morning

Willowvale - Willowvale police are investigating a case of culpable homicide following a taxi accident that claimed the lives of four people on Wednesday morning.

"It is alleged that a Toyota Quantum taxi overturned at  Nkelekethe Village and plunged into Shixini River, Willowvale, early on Wednesday morning," said police spokesperson, Captain Jackson Manatha.

"Sadly four occupants, including the driver, were fatally injured and seven others were seriously injured.

"The injured passengers were all rushed to Butterworth Hospital."

Capt Manatha said that the cause of the accident is not known at this point in time, but under investigation by the Willowvale police detectives.

"The ages of the deceased and the injured are not yet known. The identities of the deceased are still being withheld as their next of kin have not yet been informed of their deaths."

Acting Eastern Cape SAPS Provincial Commissioner, Major-General Andries Swart, passed his condolences to all the families of the deceased.

He also wished all the injured passengers speedy recoveries.
