FREE Buffalo City electricity tokens now accessible to those in rural areas

East London - Following the success of its indigent free electricity program, the Buffalo City Municipality is rolling it out to rural areas.

"Two weeks ago the Municipality encouraged its indigent consumers to access free electricity tokens using their cellphones due to the Covid 19 lockdown," the Metro said.

"We have now partnered with Eskom to also cover areas all Municipal areas including villages that are serviced by Eskom.

"Statistics from last Friday show that 26 000 consumers accessed the service and obtained their 50kWh FBE allocation for the month."

It added that a new USSD code has now been developed that includes FBE to rural (ESKOM) serviced customers.

"They will be able to enter a USSD code *130*869# and follow the prompts to be able to obtain their 50kWh FBE allocation for the month.

"This is available to both URBAN and RURAL customers and the USSD option is at no cost to the customer," the Metro added.

"The star 130 USS code replaces the previous star 120 USS code.

"The Municipality cautions against consumers who are not registered and do not qualify for the indigent subsidy of free water and electricity, not to attempt accessing the system, as it will reject them.

"This was the case when one consumer tried 76 times, unsuccessfully."

The Municipality is encouraging residents to pay their accounts online, stay at home and access services whilst observing the lockdown regulations.
