Fugitive 23-year-old man expected in court for allegedly raping his own mother

A 23-year-old man, who went on the run for a week, is expected in court soon after he was apprehended by the public and handed over to the police, who were looking for him in connection with the alleged rape of his mother.

"At the beginning of the month, on 3 July, a 58-year-old woman was raped by her 23-year-old son at her home at Ekuthuleni locality in Elliot," described police spokesperson, Captain Ursula Roelofse.

"The suspect ran away and could not be traced.

"On Monday, 10 July, members of the taxi association identified the suspect and arrested him at the taxi rank and handed him to the SAPS."

Captain Roelofse said that the SAPS was also provided with additional information that was followed up on leading to the arrest of a 24-year-old suspect, who was arrested for possession of stolen property that include a flat screen TV, laptop and computer.

"The two cases could be positively linked after the arrest," she said.

"The Cluster Commander Col Gezani thanked the community and mentioned that this incident show that the strong partnership between the local community members and the SAPS is very important in contributing to the safety of our community and our fight against crime!"
