FUSION FRENCH: Experience authentic charm in a family environment at La Passé

La Passé Restaurante & Take Away, which opened at the N2 City Shopping Centre, in Bluewater Bay, Port Elizabeth, in November last year, is where my daughter and I recently spent a relaxing evening together. Despite my busy work schedule, I always try to take time off and be a mother to her – and La Passé provided just the perfect setting.

The new establishment is the product of a husband and wife team of Vickus and Betty Bekker, who left the hustle and bustle of Gauteng and settled in the Bay at the end of last year. La Passé, which means ‘the past’ in French, does capture their idea of delivering authentic traditional restaurant hospitality to their patrons.

Walking through the door, my first impressions were that their staff are very friendly and welcoming which, for me, is a prerequisite at any family-oriented restaurant. Seated comfortably at our table, I had a chance to study the décor which I found classic, subtle and precise.

The owners were careful not to overburden the senses with fancy touches that are often a distraction. Put simply, La Passé is a place where you can go with your loved ones to unwind, chat and catch-up over healthy and tasty meal.

Our friendly waitress was quick off her mark throughout the evening. I could tell she had been well-oriented and trained on customer service and on La Passé’s various dishes through which she guided us. I was surprised that for a French-named eatery, one of their most popular dishes was Sushi.

The La Passé’s comprehensive menu offers a great selection of healthy farmhouse breakfasts, lunches, dinners and coffees. After much discussion I settled for a medium-rare sirloin steak, served with creamed spinach, pumpkin and a side salad and my daughter chose a platter of sushi.

Judging by the hmmm’s I got from my daughter, she enjoyed her meal just as much as I did mine. I will be treating her to La Passé’s Sushi Friday where you can also enjoy live Classical Music.

For our dessert, we had Malva pudding and Italian Kisses – what a perfect choice to end our meal! For a restaurant of its quality, I found all their meals very reasonably-priced.

La Passé, which is open seven days a week from 8.00 to 21:00, is also a perfect venue for affordable intimate family get-togethers, parties and corporate events of up to 50 people.
