GAME DRIVES, HIKING, BIRD-WATCHING: Enjoy an endless list of weekend activities at Zuurberg Mountain Village

Situated on the mountains of the same name, the 153 year-old historical Zuurberg Mountain Village is, without a doubt, one of the best destinations for quick weekend retreats for PE residents. From its tranquil mountain top haven, along an old wagon trail, you can enjoy magnificent 360º views of the Addo Elephant National Park and the surrounding countryside.

The Village is one of those destinations that one will always want to return to. With an open weekend on my hands, I recently found myself back to enjoy the elegant comforts and activities this renowned establishment has on offer – and I was not disappointed.

Winter weekends at Zuurberg are always special, with crackling fires, sherry and delectable, traditional country cuisines always make for memorable family times. On top of that, for this specific visit, we wanted to view the wildlife within the greater Addo Elephant National Park, which surrounds the village.

We found that mountain zebra, eland, kudu, bushbuck, duiker, red hartebeest and other endemic game of the area can be encountered as well as prolific birdlife - the Forest Weaver and the Knysna Loerie to name a few.

The Greater Addo area also offers a range of spectacular horse-riding and hiking trails. On these trails, you can enjoy the magnificent flora of the area, from indigenous riverine forests to mountains decked out in fynbos - the Greater Addo Park, including the Zuurberg Mountains, protects some of the last remaining vegetation of the region. There was so much to do, in so little time!

What made our stay more enjoyable was the fact that the hotel arranges these game drives into the Addo Elephant National Park, Amakhala Game Reserve and Scotia Safaris. An Elephant Back Safari experience is one of the definite dos. Alternatively, try guided walking trails or a Wilderness Trail, which is a full day 4x4 trail through the remote areas of the Addo National Park. From these adventures, we left with a deeper understanding and appreciation of our wildlife and nature itself.

The Zuurberg Mountain Village is highly recommended for couples, families or anyone looking for a great weekend getaway within immediate reach of PE. It is also an ideal destination to celebrate a wedding or other special occasions and their conference facilities are perfect for corporate retreats.
