Gelvandale man hands himself in for allegedly shooting dead fellow gang member

A 21-year-old suspected gang affiliate, who was wanted by police in connection with a murder in Gelvandale, Port Elizabeth, over the weekend, handed himself over to investigators at the Provincial Gang Investigation Unit on Wednesday afternoon.

"It is alleged that on Sunday, at about 15:00, Randy Van Reenen (35 years) was fatally gunned down outside a house in Libra Street, Gelvandale," said police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu.

"According to police information, Van Reenen was standing outside the house smoking with two other people.

"They noticed the two suspects, who are known to them.

"Van Reenen then went inside the house. The suspects stood at the gate and called out to Van Reenen."

When Van Reenen went outside, an argument ensued and one of the suspects pulled out a firearm and shot Van Reenen in his head.

"Van Reenen died on the scene while the two suspects fled on foot," said Colonel Naidu.

"The deceased and the suspect are affiliated to the same gang (16 Honde). The motive for the murder is suspected to be internal conflict within the gang."

The suspect will appear in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate's Court on Friday.
